Geek Cast Live S3E3: The Emotional Rushmore Rollercoaster (ft. T-Barstow In-Da-Hood)

Straight out of bushes to beat, the Geek Cast crew reunite with one of our favorite guests, Vinyl Me Please’s very own Tyler Barstow aka Lil T Money Dolla Dolla Billz. The A game is brought tonight, as we discuss our personal top albums, and more importantly, our musical Mount Rushmore. Tears and laughs are had, Nic does some chanting, and Ry finds a beagle in the system. We’re still not really sure how it got that, or in the grand scheme of things, what it actually means.

  1. Hey GCHomies…

I just got past the coldplay mini-discussion. They do have two undeniably great albums. Parachutes and Rush of Blood are fantastic. They fall into the category of ‘I feel like a good cry today’ stuff. It all reminds me of past loves lost and heartache and sorrow, but in a happy way, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, yes, Rob, Jackie-boy is fucking phenomenal. I only wish my mother wouldn’t only listen to Phil Collins and Yanni. That’s dope that you could jam out with your Ma. For me the tops from The White Stripes is DeStijl. So much amazingness coming from him. His little bits in ‘It Might Get Loud’ a movie with him and The Edge and the immortal Jimmy Page, are great. Check that out, if you haven’t already. That movie also gives me more respect for The Edge, tbh. I didn’t really know much about him, but man, he does do some great things with an axe.

Heh heh, Bob’s Burgers…you could have a whole episode just picking out everyones top 5 songs that have come outta Bob’s Burgers. Such a fun, pun-laden show.

So I originally had my top 8’s and I was gonna sheepishly apologize for cheating. Then I heard there’s a contest and I didn’t want to be disqualified for cheating. So I have top 5’s and put alternatives for each list.

There’s plenty that I know I will miss. Many more need to be on both of these lists and a lot of the albums go back and forth between both lists. Well, here we go… 🙂

My Top 5 That Are Personally Great For Various Reasons (no particular order, just as I thought of them):

Soundgarden – Superunknown (first CD I ever bought)
Nirvana – Nevermind (first CD I stole from my older sister and loved….word, GCR, word)
    The White Stripes – DeStijl
Gomez – Bring It On (under-known fantastic British band)
Jeff Buckely – Grace (there was a girl, I was in college, good memories)
Alternates: Pearl Jam – No Code(I know, I know, for fans of theirs, all their shit is great…for me this one is waaayyyy under-appreciated)….Portishead – Dummy….My Morning Jacket – Z

    My Mount Rushmore:

Led Zeppelin – Nico you’re soooooo right….anything they’ve done is the album here
The Beatles – Abbey Road (Holy Fuck)
Radiohead – Kid A (yeah, Barstow!!!!! I just triumphantly pumped my fist in the air when you just said that. Fuck, I know some of these are too recent for a Rushmore list, but man, this is my ‘I don’t even know how many times I’ve listened to this record’ record)
Massive Attack – Mezzanine (there was another girl, I was in europe, more great times)
Sigur Ros – Agaetis Byrjun (I don’t even know what they’re saying in their half English, half Icelandic, half made-up language that they sing in, but man the music hits me, right where it matters)

Alternatives; The Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed (the spy movie I make will contain a scene that has the opening half of Monkey Man playing that will make you shit your pants)…The White Album (Holy Fuck Pt.2)…

I don’t even care if I win this contest. I happy to participate and juiced to hear of something that might kickstart this comments section. I can’t wait to hear other listeners’ lists.

The great thing about music is how ubiquitous it is and how much it can mean and matter to anyone, everyone, all people. Another great thing, but also causes fights and arguments and what-not is that it’s all subjective. Lists like these can be painfully biased to the maker’s age, location…whatever. I’m sure someone somewhere is disgusted by the lack of jazz or world or whatever else there is. That’s why I don’t mind your list Rob. Clearly, my shit is skewed towards some slightly bleep-bloopy tunes. But I don’t really get down with real EDM. That being, said, it was nice to have another genre, demographic, whatever represented. And that you had reasoning behind your choices helped reinforce that you list is valid too. It’s valid, just not the best, which mine is, clearly. 🙂

Anyway, these errands aren’t going to run themselves, so, until our next impromtu meeting that up-ends the bourgeois cultural ideals that is the quiet car of the Metra Rock Island Express, farewell. 🙂

    Great episode fellas….

    1. G-
We could have a whole other episode just about “there was a girl, I was in Europe”…those were good days (except I fear some Nickelback may have been involved).
We may have a job for you…whenever Robb Bass finally does check into rehab.
      Thanks for the deep thoughts,
      -Nico

  2. Fabulous prizes!

    My top five albums

    NAS-Illmatic

    Notorious BiG-Ready To Die

    Michael Jackson-Thriller

    David Bowie-Hunky Dory

    Miles Davis-Bitches Brew

    1. I love deep thoughts from Alex at 1:16 in the morning. It is a rare bird that can mix Miles D, Bowie, Biggie, Michael, and Nas all in one stream of consciousness. ‘Ready to Die’ almost made it into my top 5…another star that burned too bright and too short. I wish it was all a dream, and that I used to read Word Up magazine…

  3. In no particular order.

Demons and Wizards: Touched by the Crimson King
Being a huge fan of the Dark Tower series I happened upon this loose Tribute album many years ago. Love it.

    U2: Joshua Tree
I know every single song on this album each one has a meaning to me in some way.

    Nirvana: Nevermind
In my teen years this was my favorite album ever. I wore the two tapes I had of it out. Thankfully by then I had found Napster.

    NWA: Straight Outta Compton
This was my introduction to rap that had a non mainstream feel about it. It was hard, gritty, and told a story. My best friend still has my vinyl.

    Led Zeppelin: IV
My dad got me into classic rock with this album. Many memories of listening to this with and without him.

    1. B-
That is a strong list. I wish the rest of U2’s career arc lived up to The Joshua Tree. We are all Dark Tower fans around here, so have to check out that Demons and Wizards thing (the name belongs around here, if nothing else). Cool story about rocking with your dad…those are the memories that count, and Zepplin is about as cool a bonding band as he could have picked.
      -Nico

    2. I’m a massive Dark Tower fan, I’ll have to check out Demons and Wizards!

Looking forward to the new film, I think Idras Elba is a strong casting choice for Roland. I can’t wait to see what he does with it.

      1. i never understood all the uproar over Idris being cast as Roland. I think he will rock it, and correct me if im wrong but the books never come right out and describe the color of his skin. I think everyone just imagined Clint Eastwood from all those spaghetti westerns.

  4. I am a migrater from the HMP and MPW podcasts. Love what you guys do. You’ve become one of the few eagerly awaited podcasts on my weekly download list.

    Getting straight into it….

    In no particular order.

    1. Pink Floyd – Wish you were here
    2. Linkin Park – hybrid theory
    3. Black stone cherry – folklore and superstition
    4. Blue October – foiled for the last time
    5. Joe Bonnamassa – live from nowhere in particular.

    Bakers Mount Rushmore
    1. Pink Floyd – the Wall (The best rock opera ever??!)
    2. The Beatles – One (The only Beatles album you need to own)
    3. The eagles – Hotel California (Just…how can you not?)
    4. The Who – Who’s Next (Without The Who there would be no guitar smashing, drum exploding rock and roll!)
    5. Muddy Waters – Anything…seriously anything. (Without Muddy Waters it’s possible none of the above would exist. Without blues there is no rock.)

Anyway, you guys are doing a great job, I’m just sorry I didn’t find you until this season.

    Cheers.
