Geek Cast Live Episode 3.41 : Joe Buck, American Demon

imageDue to Nic and his frat taking a slow barge ride he wasn’t with us this week.  So he was not able to verbally destroy the demon that is Joe Buck.  which wasnt cool because he’s the one who keeps the tungsten rod needed to shove through his black heart. Oh yeah , we also tease next weeks episode all about spoiler culture.

  1. Fan fiction idea: Cubs winning the World Series

[hopefully I didn’t just jinx the shit out of the Indians with that]

I’ll get back to you with some other ideas.

  2. I have a few thoughts (following up from my other conversation with Ryan over on MPW) about your upcoming spoiler culture discussion. I know that I am on the extreme end of the spoiler sensitivity scale, but I agree that spoiler culture is getting a little out of control.

I think something Rob said in this episode makes a lot of sense, and certainly applies to me – there are certain things that I don’t want to be spoiled on and then other things that I don’t care if I’m spoiled on. It would be ridiculous for me as a spoiler-sensitive individual to expect anyone else to know what is out-of-bounds and what is fair game, though. In that sense, I think the responsibility with spoilers goes both ways. For example, I know that you guys here are not spoiler-averse, so I tend to advance through the podcast whenever certain topics that I don’t want spoiled come up. However, if I’m listening to MPW, where they are very careful about spoilers, I would be pissed if something slipped out.

Real life example, if I’m walking down the street and happen to bump into someone who I know is going to want to talk about a movie or show I haven’t seen yet, I’ll let them know up front that I haven’t seen that movie or show yet so they know not to spoil it for me. But, like Rob said, he would also preface a spoilery conversation with “did you see [that movie] yet?” So, again, responsibility goes both ways.

Obviously that^ isn’t possible to do on a podcast, and that’s where I think spoiler culture is getting out of control. That’s where consistency (from the podcast) and taking the responsibility of preserving your own unsullied nature (from the listener) comes into play.

One final thought – as far as Vader is concerned, yes, the Vader reveal 100% IS a spoiler. I don’t care how old the movie is, it can still be spoiled. The caveat to that, I think, is that it depends on the audience. That would unquestionably have been a spoiler for my 6 y/o son before he watched Empire for the first time. Would it have been a spoiler for someone my age who hasn’t seen the movie yet?… yes, but I also wouldn’t expect you to know that I haven’t seen it and wouldn’t necessarily hold you accountable for referencing it in conversation. Would it have been nice for you to ask me in advance if I’d seen the Star Wars movies in this hypothetical scenario? Sure… but it is a gray area when dealing with something that’s so much a part of pop culture.

And, of course, if it was something I cared a lot about then I probably would have seen it by now. But… still a spoiler.

    1. About the extent of my spoiler aversion with movies, yes, I’m that guy at the theater who closes his eyes and plugs his ears during the pre-movie trailers. However, I decided earlier this year to run a little experiment with Doctor Strange where I’ve watched every trailer and even listened to the vague spoiler discussion you had of it this episode. I’ll see if I feel it degrades my viewing experience when I see it.

I did skip over your Walking Dead discussion, though, because I haven’t watched the first two episodes of this season yet.
