Jay of the Dead (aka Jason Pyles) here. Understanding that taste in movies is 100 percent subjective, I will acknowledge that this comment is already a moot point. But out of fear that your poor listeners will hear Rob’s review of “Dead Snow” and be misled, I have to call out Geek Cast Bass right here on this comment board.
For those who don’t know, “Dead Snow” is a Norwegian zombie flick from 2009 that’s a horror comedy. It’s also subtitled.
Here are just a few reasons to love it:
If you want a comedic gore-fest, what are the best kind of enemies? Zombies. But what are even better enemies to hate and utterly destroy? Nazi zombies!
Horror films are rarely set in the snow. Why? Probably because it’s bright and white. So, here we have a rare gem that gives you the arresting imagery of bright red blood splattered all over pure white snow. Also, most monsters seem to attack at night from within the darkness. But “Dead Snow” features horror scenes in broad daylight. Horror that happens in the daytime can sometimes be scarier.
But these aren’t just gory kills; these are also creative kills with highlights such as snow mobile-based violence, eyeball juices, intestines as rope, and heads ripped completely apart by strategically placed fingers! Come on, Rob! Here we have imaginative violence like we’ve seen from the likes of “Dead Alive,” which this movie celebrates, in addition to “The Evil Dead.” A group of co-eds being attacked at a remote cabin in the woods… Pure simple beauty.
And I love these characters. The characters who die versus those who survive are surprising and unpredictable. The Harbinger of Doom in this movie gives a great performance, when he’s delivering his expositional warnings… And Rob, this movie has one of us — a true Geek — indeed, a film geek who wears a “Braindead” T-shirt and has the best geek moment in that outhouse that any geek has ever had! Ever. How were you not chanting and cheering for your fellow paisano?
But on to more solid analysis: The monsters in this film are used exactly the way the shark was used in “Jaws” (1975), which won three Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture… You don’t really see much of the monsters until the third act, but we see evidence of how maliciously lethal they are from the beginning (much like “Jaws”).
And speaking of kill scenes… There’s a kill scene that occurs in a tent that we see from afar off. This is especially chilling because there’s nothing we can do about it. We are subjected to the helplessness of that situation, and we have a vantage point that informs us of just how alone we victims are… (This reminds me of the cop execution scene in “House of 1,000 Corpses” and the poignant one in “Children of Men.”)
Anyway, Rob, it’s totally OK if you couldn’t appreciate a great horror flick, but I rated this baby an 8.5 out of 10, and my co-hosts, Dr. Shock, Midnight Corey and Terror Tovey all rated it an 8 out of 10. “Dead Snow” is fairly well respected among the horror community, has a 65 percent (fresh) rating at Rotten Tomatoes, a comparable 61 on Metacritic, and a 6.4 on IMDb.com. Oh, and it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. … Just sayin’…

P.S. I saw “Dead Snow 2” (aka Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead) at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and it’s also an 8.5 out of 10, though much different than its predecessor.
