This week the Geek Cast Live crew touch base (not Bass) on some of the latest in the geek world. We talk shop about Nightvale Wine tastings, Star Wars, Joe dogs on a really cool game, and we all fantasize about gaming with Vin Diesel. In our main segment, we talk to Jamey of Stonemaier Games! We talk about his wildly successful Kickstarter, Scythe, along with some of Stonemaier’s other awesome projects. He’s also a Jedi Sentinel, so that’s kind of neat.

Be sure to check out Stonemaier Games here!

  1. Yo, yo, yo Fellas!!
Whaddup? It feels like it’s been forever ’cause I skipped an ep. But I’m excited to try to be a part of contributing to Commentors’ Corner, so I’m back. I just know there are a ton of great listeners out there that can show up to call me and idiot, which I definitely am, or call me a genius, which I definitely think I am. 🙂 Anyway, I’ve got some sidenote response to each of you individually so I’m gonna post those separately, which’ll also have the added benefit of looking like there’re multiple posts in this dope comment section. But, for overall comments….Great show, fellas! I’m not much of a gamer, but it was a cool interview with the guest. And I’m more interested now to hear any more that’s available about all your side projects, if there’s any info you all are ready to divulge about them. Also….

Best New Band Name from this Episode (or WalMart’s new ad campaign tagline):
    Buoyant, Fun Dystopia

Personal Sidenote…..the little lady dressed up in a slick dress with sexy makeup and a rose in her hair…I had a big hundred dollar bill costume on….separate, lame….together, Tango and Cash!!! Yeah, no one else got it or dug it either. 🙂

Anyway, on to the individual comments… 🙂

To start off, thanks again for all the rec’s in Wis. In short, after awesome beer #8 the whole night gets a bit hazy, you know how it goes. What we ended up doing was a bar crawl from the capital square, where our hotel was, out to State Street Brats. Holy Spicoli, we hit a ton of great bars, tops on my list being Capital Tap Haus….whatta place, I loved it. Too much else to talk about and I know I’ll be ramblin with my episode comments so I’ll get to it. 🙂

My contention, in regards to your feelings about the possible over-commercialization (I hope I’m not putting words in your mouth) of the new SW films, is that that’s what studios do and what they did with the original Trilogy. Once it took off, the studio jumped right on the whore-train as much as they could. And, for sure, compared to today’s amount of whorous commercialization, it paled in comparison, but back then it was as ridiculous as it could be. They were at the dawn of whoredom, kinda. I mean, I had SW bed sheets and underwear, ya know? My position is just that, they’re doing what they’ve always done, and I’m fine with it. Accepting it helps me enjoy all the (potential) coolness. So, I’m not doggin’ ya for thinking it might be too much….just offering a way to possibly think about it that might help ya accept it all.

And the kids diggin’ storm troopers….I think they do have access to it all to be able to think it’s cool, what with the animated show and video games. My wife is a reading specialist and works with little ankle-biters. She comes to me all the time to bone-up on stuff like The Clone Wars that they’re watching so she can rap with them about it. And I think that gets them into it, and then the parents say, “Oh, cool, my little dude’s into SW, I’ll watch the original Trilogy with him. Sweet!”

And I’m with Rob in recommending TCW. Part of it highlights the time when the storm troopers weren’t evil, or on the side of evil. It touches on some interesting points about the use of the clones by others in the war and the dichotomy of their feelings about themselves as tools, or as unique beings in the universe. It posed some deep questions about self and self-image, all the while showing us some kick-ass animation (I was always a fan of the over-computerized, almost angular, animation….going back to ReBoot, if anyone’s seen that) and some great action scenes.

The show was also great in showing Anakin’s fall, that Rob touched on, but in a bit more detail that we got in the prequels. It shows him struggling with what can be thought of as the ‘bad’ or ‘negative’ feelings we all struggle with while trying to be a good person in a shitshow of a world/society. Throughout TCW, he struggles with jealousy when Padme works closely with a dude from the banking planet….anger and confusion as he has to deal with conflicting political ideals of the Jedi Order and his own desires to take matters into his own hands….guilt and sadness as Asoka is drummed out of the Jedi Order….

I equate the whole show to Smallville. Yes, I agree, that some parts of it were annoying and schmaltzy and overly saccharine, but, taken as a whole, I love Smallville. It highlighted the development of Clark into the hero the world needs. And although there are some definite problems and Christ-like comparisons with having a nearly all-powerful superhero, it was great to see the road he traveled to become what we all know from countless interpretations of his adult life.

Anyway, sorry, yours is the most rambling, Nico. It’s good you’re watching TCW. I think in the end you’ll dig it.

I’m hear to second your thoughts on the Moth StorySlam. The little lady and I are a bit of a couple of NPR-nerds and I love the Moth. If I ever come into work on the weekend, that’s my go-to listen. Some of those stories really hit ya in the feels. Some of them are down-right hilarious. I’ll contrast that show with other, not-so-well-produced live story times around Chicago that I’ve seen. Oooof…..some of those get pretty rough. In the past I’ve seen alot of improve groups that get up to work on public speaking and storytelling, so it’s admirable, but, man some can be train-wrecks. Anyway, nice thing to be geekin on, homie. 🙂

So, alot of what I wanted to comment to/for you about is up in the set of comments for Nico. I’m right on board the TCW train. Love it. It’d be interesting to hear your thoughts on it. And I love that you keep reppin’ Rick and Morty. Everyone needs to watch that. Good on ya. That’d be sweet if you had pics of your Alternate Universe Morty costume.

I’m wondering if anyone’s seen (and this goes out to all four of ya) Kung Fury. It’s streaming on NetFlix right now, I think YouTube too. It’s kind like if Danger 5 had a weirdly awesome baby with Street Fighter (the Sega Genesis version). It’s a bunch of kooky fun.

I don’t know if you intended it, but it was great to hear the little bit at the end that was Ry and Joe starting to talk about the show. It was like peeking behind the curtain. It’s probably dumb, but I was giddy to hear it. Nice.

Finally, I’ve a request for you to work on, if you’ve got the time. I think it’d be neat to hear how you’d score the original Trilogy with EDM, D&B, TripHop, JazzHop, etc…songs. Scoring the whole trilogy would take a while, so it’d be interesting to hear your take on certain awesome, pivotal, cool and/or memorable scenes. It’s such a great space opera that some modern songs could compliment it nicely, I think. I don’t know, maybe that heretical, but it’d be cool to hear what you think.

So, I’m diggin on some Chamber Band here at work. Really nice stuff! I dig the Celtic vibe they kinda have. Nice pick.

I love the idea about a show that is dedicated to you guys being a mock-show about wine snobbery. No pre-advertising it, no build-up, just we all tune in one week and it’s you all and ridiculous wine tasting. That’s a golden gem!

If you haven’t seen it, there’s a documentary on NetFlix called Somm. It follows some snobs in their pursuit to become Master Sommeliers, which is even balls-out crazier that just being a regular sommelier. It’s both interesting and ridiculous. At one point, one of the dudes says something like, “It has a hint of freshly cut garden hose…” and I about lost it. There was definitely a clean-up in Aisle: My pants. And the other people in the movie go along with it like it was a poignant and apt comment!! It’s got plenty of moments to laugh at. I recommend pairing the viewing with a nice bottle of $4.99 L’Authentique from Trader Joe’s. 🙂

  6. Oh, one last thing, for all of ya….

I gotta thank you dudes because I’ve been poaching from your creative forests and using Terribad and Strong in heavy rotation. I like ’em.

Also, I’m trying to introduce a new spin on an old saying. It goes something like, “Oooff, he/she’s got a face for podcasts!!”

If ya want, take that out for a spin around the block….kick the tires….let me know what ya think. 🙂
